The Truth About Getting Started

Many new doulas feel overwhelmed by what they think they need before they can start working with clients. You might feel pressure to:

❌ Spend thousands on trainings and certifications
❌ Have a fully developed website and social media presence
❌ Buy an expensive doula bag filled with tools
❌ Offer free births to “gain experience”

But here’s the truth: Your first year should be about skill-building, confidence, and smart business choices—not drowning in unnecessary expenses.

The Essentials: What You Actually Need

✅ A Solid Doula Training – Choose one that aligns with your philosophy and business goals. (Certifications can be valuable, but they’re not legally required in most places.)

✅ Business Basics – Register your business, open a separate bank account, have a way for people to find/contact you (could be a landing page, a doula directory listing, website, Facebook page, etc.), and get a simple contract.

✅ Client Communication System – Even if you don’t have a website, set up a professional email and create an easy way for people to book a consultation (Calendly, Google Forms, etc.).

✅ Confidence in Your Skills – You don’t need every advanced technique, but you do need a solid understanding of birth support, comfort measures, and client advocacy.

💡 Pro Tip: Many new doulas spend months getting “ready” but never actually book clients. Action creates clarity. Start where you are and build as you go. Make sure your foundations are STRONG so your business is sustainable from the very beginning.
